Bugs and Baseball?!

The PSULV SFZones Team at Coca-Cola Park

What are you “supposed” to catch at Coca-Cola Park? Baseballs, right? Think again!

Last week our team spent a couple of hours at Coca-Cola Park, home of the Lehigh Valley IronPigs AAA Baseball team, catching Spotted Lanternflies. For whatever reason, Coca-Cola Park in Allentown, Pennsylvania is the hot-SPOT for SPOTTED Lanternflies!

Check out how many are just on this one support beam at the stadium!

So how exactly are you supposed to catch Spotted Lanternflies? Hint, it’s not with a baseball glove!
Keep reading to see our team’s foolproof methods for catching these pesky insects!

1. A Shop-Vac!

The easiest way to humanely capture Spotted Lanternflies is with a wet-vac. To use this method, fill the interior drum of the wet-vac with one gallon of water and five ounces of liquid laundry detergent. Then, vacuum up those insects!

2. Plastic Bags

Spotted Lanternflies are easy to pick up with plastic bags! Just make sure you have something to put them into afterward (such as a mason jar or small plastic tub) and place the container in the freezer.

3. Bug Nets

Bug nets are a super fun way to collect Spotted Lanternflies (if you don’t want to get to close!) It might be a little bit difficult to get the insect out of the net, but it helps to empty it into a baggie or small plastic tub.
